Band Camp
Marching Band
7/30/07 - 8/4/07
Hope College (Holland, MI)

The week of Band Camp is when the Marching Band really gets serious about learning the drill for the new season's show, and usually happens the first week of August. Band Camp takes place at Hope College in Holland, MI. Students stay in the dorms, eat in the cafeteria, and rehearse all over the campus. The band does get some down time each day and can take advantage of the College's pool, or take part in other activities (but only if they have their music memorized!).

See a reminder list below for things to bring to band camp!

During their week-long stay at Hope, students will take part in indoor and outdoor music rehearsals. They will benefit from sectional rehearsals as well. These sectionals are run by a guest instructors who specialize in their instrument as well as being music majors.

One of the most important parts of Band Camp are the drill rehearsals out on the football fields. Students learn the drill and eventually add in the music. By the end of the week, most of the show is learned and can be performed on the move.

Each night is ended with an activity for the whole band. In the past, traditions have included pizza night, a visit to Craig's Cruisers, karaoke, and the band dance.

Several band parents (Moms and Dads, especially) are needed to chaperone the students during the week. In addition to chaperoning, many band parents do other jobs while at camp. Some have a good time with the Sewing Moms while others join with the Prop Pops. There are always volunteer Band Camp Nurses on duty to help with any injuries during the week.

Band Camp is hard work, which causes many students to dread the week. Once they are there, it goes by fast. The benefits are many for the band as a whole and for the individual. Band members will see how their hard work and dedication pays off when they do a special performance the last day of Band Camp for their parents and family members.

6:00 a.m. Monday Morning Check-In, eat breakfast before you arrive, you must check in with the camp nurses to turn in all medications before getting on the bus.
